# Delete an agent

> Deleting an agent stops it answering at once. You have 30 days to restore it before its knowledge, number and widget are destroyed.

Deleting an agent stops it answering on every channel straight away. For 30 days you can restore it exactly as it was. After that it's destroyed for good. Your conversations and leads are kept either way.

<Tip>
  Only want the agent to stop answering? Switch its channels off under **Channels** instead. Nothing is lost, and you can switch them back on at any time. See [channels](/docs/concepts/channels).
</Tip>

## Who can delete an agent

Owners and admins can delete and restore agents. People with the Agent role can't. See [team and roles](/docs/account/team-and-roles).

## Delete it

<Steps>
  <Step title="Open the agent's Overview">
    Go to **Agents → your agent**. The last card on the page is **Danger zone**.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Click Delete this agent">
    A dialog opens, headed "Delete" followed by the agent's name. It lists exactly what will be destroyed and what will be kept, with counts. It also names the site the chat bubble is on and the agent's phone number, if it has them.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Confirm">
    Click **Delete agent**, or **Keep it** to back out. You're taken to **Agents**.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## What happens straight away

* The agent stops answering on chat, phone and email.
* It disappears from your agent lists and moves to **Recently deleted** on the **Agents** page.
* The chat bubble on your site stops answering. The snippet stays on your page. Nothing changes on your side.
* The phone number is **kept** while the deletion can still be undone.

## Restore it within 30 days

On the **Agents** page, the **Recently deleted** card lists deleted agents, with how many days are left for each. Click **Restore** and the agent comes back on the channels it was answering on, with its knowledge, widget key, phone number and settings unchanged.

## After 30 days

When the 30 days run out, the agent is destroyed. The cleanup runs every 15 minutes, so this happens shortly after the deadline. After that it can't be restored.

| Destroyed                                                                               | Kept                    |
| --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | ----------------------- |
| Its knowledge sources | Its conversations |
| Its phone number, which is released to the carrier. You won't get the same number back. | Captured leads |
| Its chat widget key | Messages the agent took |
| Its actions and channel settings | |
| Its instructions, greeting, transfer number and email address | |

The kept records are your history of talking to your customers. They stay in **Conversations** and your **Inbox**, still labelled with the agent's name.

## Take a copy first

To keep a copy of your conversations or collected details outside WireDesk, export them before you delete. When the agent has knowledge sources, the delete dialog links to **Conversations (CSV)** and **Collected details (CSV)**. See [exports](/docs/workspace/exports) for everything you can export.
